About The Teacher
Spring Into Goal Setting! My name is Jorge Aguilar, and I have the privilege of being a College Prep II instructor at Judson Early College Academy--alongside a phenomenal staff that is dedicated to students 100%. I have been an educator for fourteen years. This year is my 15th year, and I love it! Below is a little information about me. HOBBIES My hobbies include reading superhero graphic novels and fiction books. I love going to the movies, playing drums, drawing, and video games. I also enjoy English literature. I love superheroes like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Transformers, He-man and She-ra. In the weekends, I like to spend a quiet evening at home alongside my friends and loved ones. Chances are that you will also find me in a movie theater if a new superhero movie comes out. FAMILY My family is made up of my father, Joel, who taught me a lot about hard work and discipline, my mother, Minerva, who instilled in me passion, dedication and commitment, and my sister Miriam, who is also in education as vice principal at SAISD. My sister is probably the most generous and level-headed person I know. She is great! Both my parents currently live in Laredo, Texas, but they are thinking of moving up to San Antonio. I have a wonderful westie puppie and her name is Zelda. My students chose that name. They are encouraging me to get a male pup and name him "Link." We are a small, humble family, and we are very close. My younger sister and I were also the first two members of our entire family to graduate from college. We both pursued the same bachelor's and master's degrees. TEACHING CAREER I started my teaching career in 1999, when I graduated from Texas A & M International University in Laredo, with a Bachelor's degree in English and Reading with secondary certification. I began teaching language arts at L. J. Christen Middle School in Laredo, Texas. In 2004, after five great years at the middle school level, I moved to the high school in order to get the high school experience. At Martin High School, also in Laredo, I taught English and Reading and I was department chair. I was also in charge of the class of 2008, the newspaper, the yearbook and UIL Literary Criticism. I was busy, but I loved it. ADMINISTRATIVE CAREER In 2006, after finishing my master's degree in educational administration, I got hired as an assistant principal at Lamar Middle School in Laredo. During these two years as assistant principal I learned a lot from my colleagues and my principal, Ms. Salinas, who taught me a lot about consistency and fairness. She was a great mentor. In 2008, I moved to San Antonio and was offered the opportunity to be an assistant principal at Alamo Heights. My three years at Alamo Heights allowed me to accumulate more great experience as an administrator. I will always treasure these five years working as assistant principal. However, my true passion lies in the classroom, where I can have the greatest impact on students. JECA & COLLEGE PREP This is my sedond year at JECA. With my background in education and administration, I hope to be an inspiration for my students as they continue this journey into the challenging but fascinating world of early college. I am very proud of my students for making the choice to come to JECA and get a headstart in their college careers. This year it is my mission to arm my students with the reading, writing and college prep skills necessary to independently overcome any challenges that stand in their way as they make their way up to that graduation stage. I know together we can ensure our students succeed. Go JECA Raptors! Sincerely, Jorge Aguilar, M.Ed.
