In English I, JECA students will build on their prior knowledge and skills in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills as mandated by the Texas Education Agency ‘s English Language Arts and Reading Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
· Reading: students read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts
· Writing: students compose a variety of written texts with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail;
· Research: students are expected to know how to locate a range of relevant sources and evaluate, synthesize, and present ideas and information;
· Listening and Speaking, students listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas in conversations and in groups;
· Oral and Written Conventions, students learn how to use the oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing.
Students are expected to:
Prentice-Hall literature and writing textbooks purchased by the district will be issued to the students.
Major works for this year include those listed below. While copies of the texts are available for your use, we strongly recommend that you purchase your own copy to facilitate your note-taking within the text. Specific information regarding each text will be supplied at a later time.
Steinbeck, John. Of Mice and Men. Homer, The Odyssey (Rober Fitzgerald’s translation).
Lee, Harper, To Kill a Mockingbird. Rand, Ayn. Anthem.
Other reading materials will be used as necessary.
Book Policy:
Every student is expected to have a copy of the required texts.
Make Up Test Policy:
It is the student’s responsibility to complete any missing exams within three days of the time the exam was given. The student is solely responsible to acknowledge exam dates which are provided by the teacher. All students who need to take make-up exams must make arrangements with the instructor within 48hours. All make-up exams will be different from the original exam.
Retest Policy:
Any student scoring below 69% on a test will be permitted to retake that test after attending English Raptor Time for re-teaching of the concept. The retest will occur within three calendar days (not including weekends and holidays) of the re-teach. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the retest with the teacher. Any student who is going to retake a test MUST attend English Raptor time for additional assistance prior to retaking the test. All re-tests will be different from the original.
Make-up or Late Work Policy:
It is the students’ responsibility to obtain all class notes from class discussion that occurred during classes that they missed. All work is due to the instructor at the time it is asked for in class. Daily work will NOT be accepted late at all. MAJOR assignments will be accepted UP TO TWO (2) DAYS LATE with the following penalties: Ten (10) points deducted for school day: (maximum grades: 90 for 1 day late, 80 for 2 days late). After the second school day (maximum grade at that point is 80), late major assignments will NOT be accepted. Late work will not be accepted via the internet. It must be turned in to the teacher.
Plagiarism
Academic dishonesty involving, but not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism and collusion are a violation of school policy and will not be tolerated. If you are caught plagiarizing another person’s work or cheating on a test, the assignment or test will receive a zero.
Grading:
Tests/Projects 50%
Daily/Quizzes 40%
Journals/Other 10%
Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. Tests are given when the required material has been completed.
All major papers, projects, and research assignments will receive grades throughout the progression of the project and a final grade at the completion of the project.
